Louis XVI-Style Marquetry Commodes
This magnificent pair of French commodes captures the refinement of the Louis XVI style. A highly detailed parquetry design is inlaid into the commodes’ facades and centered by beautiful marquetry still lifes of fruits, flowers and urns. The foliate motif continues with abundant neoclassical bronze ormolu decoration, including acanthus swags and wreath drawer pulls. Each commode is completed by a white marble top accented with elegant grey veins. Crafted with subtlety and meticulous attention to detail, this pair of commodes epitomizes all of the best elements of the neoclassical Louis XVI style.
Based on the furniture and decor created during the reign of French King Louis XVI (1774-1789), the Louis XVI style experienced a comeback in the 1860s in Europe. This revival reintroduced a formal classicism to furniture with an emphasis on simplicity, straight lines and symmetry. The slenderness of proportion was once again favored in furniture, as well as classical motifs and understated luxury. Today, this elegant and timeless style remains highly prized.
